About us

We specialise in black and brown alpacas. Why?

85% of all Alpacas are white due to the versatility of the white wool. Our personal preference is for the darker coloured alpaca and we have seen that there is a growing demand for these natural colours.

After all there are 22 recognised alpaca colours so it would be a shame not to use them!

We believe that the future of the alpaca and that of the alpaca industry in the UK is very positive. the demand for alpacas and alpaca basd products is increasing year on year.

We are Mark and Sue Steele and we run Patou Alpacas from our home in Chicksgrove near Tisbury in South Wiltshire.

It is our aim to breed the highest quality herd of coloured alpacas that we can.

Our foundation breeding females were carefully selected and we use the same attention to detail when selecting the herd sires for the future generations.

Each year we hope to see an improvement on the previous generation.

We specialise in black and brown alpacas and can see that there is a growing demand for these wonderful natural colours in the clothing industry.

Our alpaca herd is relatively small at around 25 - 30 animals but we enjoy being able to refer to each animal by name.

We know each animal's character very well and treat them all with the best possible care and attention. Oh alright we love them............there I've said it!

We find ourselves just watching them for long periods of time.

Warning - alpacas are seriously addictive!

The name 'Patou' is from the ancient french word meaning shepherd.

We have a house in the Midi Pyrenees region of France and when the time is right we will be taking the herd on the long trip south where we will all begin a new adventure.

With this future plan in mind we gave the herd a name with a french connection.

We love to talk about our animals and welcome anyone who is interested in learning about alpacas to the farm. We particularly welcome those thinking of getting into the alpaca business or those who are new to alpaca ownership.

We are always happy to help out with advice on any aspect of alpaca ownership.

Give us a call and we will introduce you to some of the most interesting, gentle and productive animals in the world.
